The Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Do you trust what you know? Understanding your Third Eye Chakra

We arrive today at the centre of inner vision — the Third Eye Chakra, Ajna, meaning 'to perceive' or 'to command', situated between and just above the eyebrows. This is the seat of intuition, insight, imagination and inner knowing. Where the lower chakras deal with the world as it is, the third eye concerns itself with the world as it truly is — the patterns beneath the surface, the intelligence behind experience, and the capacity to perceive beyond what the five senses alone can offer.

When the Third Eye Chakra is blocked

A blocked third eye is often the result of being told, in one way or another, not to trust your own knowing. Perhaps your intuitions were dismissed, your sensitivity labelled as imagination, your inner experiences explained away. Over time, you learned to rely entirely on external authority and rational analysis, and the inner eye slowly closed.

Physically, this can manifest as headaches and migraines, sinus problems, vision difficulties, poor sleep and an inability to recall dreams. Emotionally, there is a rigidity and closed-mindedness — an inability to perceive the bigger picture or imagine alternatives beyond the immediately visible. Spiritually, meaning feels absent. Prayer or contemplation bring no sense of contact. The inner life feels like an empty room.

My approach as a Reiki Master

At a blocked third eye, I place one hand gently at the brow and one at the back of the head at the corresponding point, working simultaneously on both the front and back of this centre.

I visualise several symbols here to address patterns held across time (the closed third eye often has long roots), to heal the emotional belief that inner knowing cannot be trusted and finally to begin awakening the centre. I visualise a deep indigo light, quiet and clear as a midnight sky, slowly brightening behind the brow — gently, without overwhelming.

When the Third Eye Chakra is balanced

A person with a balanced third eye carries a quiet quality of perception that is quite distinctive. They notice what others miss. They trust their hunches and have learned, through experience, that the inner voice is worth listening to. They can hold multiple levels of reality simultaneously — the practical and the symbolic, the visible and the unseen — without confusion.

Physically, sleep is deep and restorative, dreams are vivid and meaningful, concentration is strong and the mind feels clear. Emotionally, intuition is trusted and refined. Wisdom has been earned rather than assumed. Spiritually, the person perceives patterns, synchronicity and meaning in their experience — not as magical thinking, but as genuine attunement to the intelligence woven through existence.

My approach as a Reiki Master

A balanced third eye is luminous under my hands — a still, clear, deep indigo quality of energy that seems to see beyond the immediate.

In these sessions I work gently to support the connection between the third eye and the crown above it — encouraging the clear inner vision to be held within a context of spiritual wisdom.

When the Third Eye Chakra is too open

An overactive third eye can be disorientating to live with — and is sometimes mistaken for spiritual advancement when it is actually a form of overwhelm. The inner eye is flooded with impressions, visions, and perceptions that arrive faster than they can be integrated.

Physically, there may be persistent headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, dissociation and difficulty being present in the body. Emotionally, the boundary between inner experience and outer reality can become unclear — there may be paranoia, obsessive thinking, or an attachment to psychic or spiritual experiences that becomes its own form of avoidance. Spiritually, the opened eye needs the grounded heart and rooted body to give what it sees any actual meaning or use.

My approach as a Reiki Master

With an overactive third eye, grounding is the first priority before any work at the brow itself. I begin at the feet and root, establishing a strong downward connection to the earth, then work slowly upward — so that by the time I reach the third eye, there is a container to receive the work.

At the brow itself, I work to slow and clarify rather than activate. I visualise the swirling energy at the third eye becoming still and clear — like turbulent water settling. The intention: 'You can trust what you see. You do not need to see everything at once.'

Today's affirmation: I trust my inner knowing. I see clearly.

A practice for this week

This week, I invite you to honour one intuition per day — not a major life decision, something small. A feeling about which route to take, which person to reach out to, which book to pick up. Follow it. Notice what happens. The third eye strengthens when we act on what it shows us, rather than talking ourselves out of it.

Prevoius casework

Sometimes we only wish to see the best in a situation, rather than what the reality of the situation is. Having resolved an issue with a previous client, they were able to stand back and take a more reflective view of the situation developing around them. When we find ourselves within the depth of the forest, it is sometimes difficult to see a singular tree. The magnitude of the perceived situation is exacerbated, yet when we are able to analyse each component, the imagined gravity lessens. Having a balanced Third Eye Chakra allows us to see the situation for what is is, not what we believe it to be.
