Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

We rise today to the throat — to the place where inner life meets outer world, where the unseen becomes spoken, and where truth is either expressed or swallowed. The Throat Chakra, Vishuddha (meaning 'especially pure'), governs all forms of authentic expression: not only speech, but writing, creativity, listening, and the courage to live in alignment with what we know to be true. This is the centre of our voice — in every sense of that word.

When the Throat Chakra is blocked
A blocked throat is almost always a story of silencing. It may be that our voice was unwelcome as a child — we were told we were too loud, too sensitive, too much. We may have learnt that the cost of speaking truth was too high, and so we fell silent for safety. The words accumulated and found nowhere to go.
Physically, this often manifests as chronic sore throats, thyroid imbalances, jaw tension and teeth clenching, neck stiffness, and voice problems. Emotionally, there is a feeling of invisibility — of not being heard, of having things to say that never quite make it out. Social anxiety and fear of judgment are common. Spiritually, the soul's unique voice — its calling, its gifts, its particular song — goes unsung.
My approach as a Reiki Master
A blocked throat requires patience and a quality of safety in the session environment before the energy will shift. I place one hand gently at the throat and one at the back of the neck, holding a warm, clear intention of permission and safety.
I visualise Reiki symbols that address emotional healing because the blockage at the throat is almost always rooted in an emotional experience of being silenced. I picture clear blue light, like clean sky after rain, opening and filling the throat centre. I may also spend time at the jaw and shoulders, where unspoken words frequently accumulate as physical tension.

When the Throat Chakra is balanced
A balanced throat is not necessarily a loud one. The person whose throat chakra is healthy may be quietly spoken — but when they speak, something in you listens. Their words carry weight because they are genuine. They listen as deeply as they speak. Inner and outer life are in alignment.
Physically, the voice is clear, the thyroid and neck are healthy, and there is ease of movement through the jaw and shoulders. Emotionally, authentic self-expression feels natural across all forms — writing, conversation, creative work. Spiritually, the person lives in alignment with their truth — not perfectly, but genuinely, and with a willingness to keep returning to it.
My approach as a Reiki Master
A balanced throat chakra has a clear, resonant quality under my hands — like crystal. The energy is open, vibrant and communicates ease.
In sessions where the throat is well, I enjoy simply appreciating this centre and acknowledging it before moving upward. It is a pleasure to work with.

When the Throat Chakra is too open
An overactive throat fills every silence with words. Communication has become compulsive — a way of managing anxiety, asserting presence, or avoiding the discomfort of stillness and inner life.
Physically, this can manifest as frequent sore throats from overuse, hyperthyroid patterns, and exhaustion from constant output. Emotionally, there is difficulty listening, a tendency to interrupt, and words used as a way to control or defend rather than connect. Spiritually, the sacred word requires silence in which to be born — a throat that never stops cannot receive the wisdom it also needs.
My approach as a Reiki Master
With an overactive throat, I work first to slow the energy — placing hands gently at the throat and inviting stillness rather than more activation. I address the anxiety or need that underlies the compulsive expression.
The intention: 'You can trust the silence. The truth does not need to rush.'

Today's affirmation: I speak my truth with love. My voice matters.
A practice for this week
This week, I offer you a simple practice: before you speak, pause for just one breath. In that breath, ask: is this true? Is this kind? Is this mine to say? You don't need to answer all three in the affirmative — but the asking itself begins to bring the throat chakra into conscious relationship with your deeper wisdom.
Previous Casework
A past work colleague asked me once "What is this Reiki stuff you do?", so after a brief explanation they decided they'd like to give it a go - just to see what happens. It was very apparent when making the energetic connection that there was a significant blockage within the Throat Chakra, so extensive work was completed here and on the Solar Plexus Chakra. Following the session I explained the main areas of work and asked what had been troubling them and why hadn't they discussed it as it was causing problems within the Chakra system - to which they replied that they had been pondering a major employment decision and during the session they had received a point of clarity, knowing that the need to discuss the issue had to be addressed as it had been put off for too long. I'm happy to report that their meeting was productive and well receive by their manager.
